Lecture 14: Online Learning
نویسنده
چکیده
So far we have mostly studied statistical learning theory, which focuses on batch learning under probabilistic assumptions. More specifically, we have mostly assumed that the learning algorithm has access to a training set S of n examples drawn iid from a distribution D, and we would like the algorithm to produce a hypothesis or predictor that has low error (measured in some way) on fresh samples generated from D (i.e. low generalization error). We saw how to prove generalization bounds based on properties like uniform convergence and covering numbers, and we also saw some algorithms like boosting and SVM for the batch setting. Today and for the next several weeks we will study a different learning paradigm called online learning or sequential prediction. This setting makes no probabilistic assumptions and hence does not care much about generalization. Nevertheless we will see connections to statistical learning and to game theory, as well as many new algorithms.

Background: The purposes of this study were to develop a problem-based learning program for nursing student’s education and to evaluate the program after its implementation. Methods: An intervention study carried out on 27 third year undergraduate nursing students in the nursing and midwifery faculty of Kashan University of Medical Sciences. Problem-based learning method was used for one group...

متن کاملComparing two teaching strategies Lecture and PBL, on learning and retaining in nursing students
Introduction. Health care services require nurses , who are critical thinkers, with high learning Skills, who can solve problems for which there are often no standard solutions. Therefore, a change in the way teachers teach merits consideration. Frost argued that pbl equiped nurses with skills demanded by society. Methods. With above consideration, this research , that is a semi-exprimenta...
متن کاملA Randomized Crossover Design to Assess Learning Impact and Student Preference for Active and Passive Online Learning Modules
Medical education increasingly involves online learning experiences to facilitate the standardization of curriculum across time and space. In class, delivering material by lecture is less effective at promoting student learning than engaging students in active learning experience and it is unclear whether this difference also exists online. We sought to evaluate medical student preferences for ...
متن کاملComparison of the effect of lecture and blended teaching methods on students’ learning and satisfaction
Introduction: Blended learning, a new approach in educational planning, isdefined as an applying more than one method, strategy, technique or media in education. Todays, due to the development of infrastructure of Internet networks and the access of most of the students, the Internet can be utilized along with traditional and conventional methods of training. The aim of this study was to compar...
